Listening - Change and Growth

This ancient land of ours in some amazing ways has attracted and drawn to her shores a great many illumined souls from far off lands. Mary Geegh, an American educator and author of these true stories, was one such person who came to India in response to an inner call.

She met Dr. Frank Buchman, the initiator of Moral Re-Armament (now known as Initiatives of Change) in 1924. She was then facing a major decision of her life. Should she accept a proposal of marriage from Harry in America or continue teaching in India for which she felt a deep sense of calling. She sought advice from Dr. Buchman who told her, “Mary, God will show you which to choose – Harry or India”. She chose India. Mary Geegh worked in India for more than 40 years. She was the headmistress of a Girls’ school in Andhra Pradesh. She loved people. Many people beat a pathway to her door to find answers to their problems. She taught them to listen to God for guidance. This led to surprising results, some of which she recounts in this book.

I had the pleasure of meeting her and got to know some of the people she has written about, especially Ananda Reddy and his wife. Their remarkable story told in some detail in this book is one of the most inspiring stories of change I have known personally. Its appeal is as great now as it was then.

John Faber has done a great service in publishing this edited version of Mary Geegh’s – Stories From India. These simple true stories of real people bear witness to the eternal truth that anyone anywhere can listen in prayerful silence to “the still small voice of God” and obeying it “grow in relationship with Him, and move towards the destiny planned for each one of us.” Niketu Iralu’s foreword adds value to the book, a real treasure.
