HOPE IN THE CITIES PROGRAMS
Metropolitan Richmond Day
Building Trust in the Region
In his report to the Richmond community, Dr. James Crupi said ‘Regionalism is not just about projects but about relationships.’
Metropolitan Richmond Day is an annual event that convenes leaders from the public and private sectors to discuss key regional issues, and to encourage partnership across differences of race, class and jurisdiction.
Since 1996 Hope in the Cities has brought stimulating and provocative speakers to Richmond, including Bill McNeal, 2004 National School Superintendent of the Year from Wake County NC; former Governor William Winter of Mississippi; and urban expert and author David Rusk.
The 2008 speaker, former Mayor of Charlotte, NC, Richard Vinroot, addressed hundreds of community leaders drawing on his experience of forging creative partnerships. At the public forum following the breakfast Vinroot engaged with a panel of Richmond citizens to explore historic perspectives, current realities, and future hopes for regional cooperation in the Richmond metropolitan area. Metropolitan Richmond Day 2009 offered an interactive discussion using polling technology and table discussions on education, race relations, and socioeconomic differences. Read the report.
